The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

There are many different types of books that intrigue readers. Some people enjoy reading narratives; others enjoy reading books that make them think. I, personally, enjoy reading books of the action-adventure genre. I have been reading the series of books, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, written by Rick Riordan for quite some time now. My love for Greek mythology led me to read this series. There are currently four books in the series: The Lightning Thief, The Sea of Monsters, The Titan's Curse, and The Battle of the Labyrinth. In the series, the Titans of Greek mythology are rising to combat the Olympians of Greek mythology here in the Western world. The Olympian gods must rely on a child demigod who will fulfill a prophecy of either saving or destroying Mt. Olympus, home of the gods, when he or she turns sixteen. The latest book in the series (the same book I am commenting on) is The Battle of the Labyrinth. In this story, the fourteen-year old Percy, a son of Poseidon, must descend into the Labyrinth, created by the genius architect Daedalus, with his three friends Annabeth, a daughter of Athena, Grover, a satyr, and Tyson, a cyclops and Percy's half brother, to stop the evil forces of Kronos, Lord of the Titans, from reaching Camp Half-Blood, the summer camp for demigods. If properly navigated, the Labyrinth can lead you anywhere in the world in a short amount of time. This aspect of the Labyrinth is why the forces of Kronos want to use it to find their way to Camp Half-Blood. The four friends plunge into the Labyrinth without a guide to seek help from its inventor, Daedalus. On the way, Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and Tyson face many creatures such as empousai, dracaenae, giants, the sphinx, and more. All the events build up to an exciting conclusion that leaves you begging for more.

I very much enjoyed reading this book. It is a suspenseful, action-packed story that leaves you hanging onto the edge of your seat. I would highly recommend you read this book. You must read the first three books in the series before you read The Battle of the Labyrinth to get the back story. Otherwise, you will have no idea of what is going on. Still I guarantee that you will not be able to stop reading once you have started. Also, if you enjoy Greek mythology, then this is the series you need to read.

The series is still not finished yet, so you will just have to wait for the next continuation of the series before you find the answers to the questions left at the end of The Battle of the Labyrinth. This annoyance is one downside to the series, as it is to any other series, yet, it is only created by Riordan's excellent writing. We all will just have to wait for the cramped hand of a writer.

Note: The creatures and characters mentioned in this story, other than Percy, Grover, Tyson, and Annabeth, are all found in Greek mythology. For further information on these mythological beings, go to: http://www.greekmythology.com/.

  1. I agree this book is great, you can never guess what is going to happen next. I loved it and am looking forward to the fifth book coming out this May. I even heard there is going to be a movie on the first one coming out soon. I love all the Greek mythology because that's always been my thing, and I like how Riordan changes the monsters to match modern times, which usually comes out pretty funny. I just hope that the next book is this good, but I'm confident it will be better or at least, as good.
