Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman

In Full Tilt, by Neal Shusterman, Blake is a responsible sixteen-year-old who frequently denies a mysterious past. The teenager is constantly watching out for his thrill-seeking younger brother Quinn, but things get a little weird when a mysterious girl named Cassandra approaches Blake and his friends, Maggie and Russ, at a local fair. Cassandra hands Blake an invitation to a better roller-coaster park that Cassandra just so happens to own. Hesitant, Blake does not open the invitation but when Quinn’s curiosity gets the best of him, he opens the envelope and is suddenly hit with a coma. Not quite sure why Quinn fell into a coma when he opened the envelope, Blake notices there’s an address on the envelope and he gets Maggie and Russ into Blake’s car and the three venture out in hopes that they can uncover what exactly is going on.

The address leads the three to a wooded property and Blake speeds through the woods in frustration. Trying to dodge a tree, the car hurls off the side of a cliff. Miraculously, the teenagers survive and find themselves at the entrance to Cassandra’s theme park. At the gate, they expect to be given their ticket but they find that a symbol is imprinted on their hands and they scan the symbol in order to ride the rides. Blake immediately sets off through the park to find Quinn. When Blake sees his younger brother in line for a merry-go-round, Blake rushes over to join him. At first, the ride seems entirely safe. Then, the animals spring to life and the kids on the ride are hurled off the backs of the animals, tossed into a stampede of hooves and paws that crush the kids into the dirt. Blake and Quinn manage to be a part of the few who survive.

After the dust had cleared, Blake notices that objects in the park resemble the faces of the riders that had been on the deadly merry-go-round. Knowing that something’s up, he runs into Cassandra on the next ride which also is not what it seems. He asks her a couple of questions and discovers that once a person enters the park, if they don’t get through all seven rides before sunrise, they’ll be trapped in the park forever. Blake is suddenly thrust into a race for time, going up against seven of his deepest fears and even reliving a terrible incident from his childhood. All the while, Cassandra tries to convince him of plans to join her and rule the carnival with her for eternity. Blake turns the offer down numerous times because he determined to defeat the carnival before the carnival defeats him.

Over the years, teachers have recommended Full Tilt to my classes and I saw this blog as an opportunity to finally read it. The novel is full of action, mystery, and adventure and it tests the imagination of the reader. The reader is always wondering what the outcome of the exotic rides will be and when the novel is over, it leaves the reader thirsty for more. Full Tilt is definitely worth reading and the twist at the end leaves a decadent final thrill to the entire story.

  1. this is not a comment to be counted for a grade. I met the author of Full Tilt in 7th grade in Michigan. I had lunch with him and he was a really cool guy. He talked with us ( for i was not alone with him there were other students)about how he thought of ideas for books.
I really like his book Downsiders the series about the Shadow Club and some of his short stories.

  2. Full Tilt was an interesting read, and shows just how powerful temptation can be. While most of us will never be tempted with the power or attacked in the way Blake was, we will have our temptations, and our fears. Blake represents the best in us and how to not let past experiences bring us down.
I agree with Bryan’s opinion that Full Tilt is a good adventure novel, and that it makes readers imaginations strain to imagine everyday objects turning into objects of fear. Anyone who likes adventures, or likes theme parks and hasn’t been to any for a while would enjoy this book, and Neal Shusterman brings out many good elements in this novel.

This is not part of the comment, but I remember when Neal Shusterman came into RMS a few years ago. He was a very nice guy, and his visit inspired me to read Full Tilt.

  3. I have not read Full Tilt by Neal Shusterman, but after reading this summary, I may do so very soon. This book by Shusterman seams like a very interesting and gripping book for several reasons. One major reason this book seams gripping is because the reader is always wondering if Blake will survive the seven rides of the park. I was immediately struck with the question "What could possibly be in an envelope that could cause a person to go into a coma?" and even after completing reading this summary, this question still remains. A simple address should not have these results. This is one of the greater reasons I would like to read this book; because there are many unanswered questions that linger. Another example of a question that arose in me is "Why did the mysterious girl want others to suffer with her?" I would love to read this book for several reasons. A major reason is how the book sparks your curiosity with many tragic events, and another reason being that it is full of suspense. From reading this summary, I would definitely recommend reading this book to anyone looking for a suspense filled thriller!

  5. Neal Shusterman is a fantastic author. I met him in middle school as well. One of his novels, The Dark Side of Nowhere, was a reading assignment in sixth grade literature, and although I was at first hesitant towards it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. After meeting him I also read the Downsiders which was quite interesting as well. I had been planning on reading Full Tilt, and now I am very much compelled to. Neal Shusterman has a very unique style in his writing. He is one of the few science fiction writers that I enjoy because he writes thrillers that keep you on the edge of your seat and not able to set the book down. This story about a race against time in a mysterious theme park sounds very exciting, and I can't wait to read it and figure out the answers to all the unanswered questions in this review!
