Savannah Blues

By: Mary Kay Andrews

Savannah Blues is a novel set in Savannah Georgia about a woman nicknamed “Weezie”. The novel begins when Weezie is married to an ultra WASP (white Anglo-Saxon protestant), Talmadge Evans III. However, after Talmadge spent an evening with another woman, Caroline, the marriage between Weezie and Talmadge no longer exist. The Evans family owns about three quarters of Savannah making it impossible for Weezie to escape him. Since Weezie has no where to go, she moves into the backyard carriage house. Weezie is an antique picker who goes through Savannah’s garage sales when she is not dealing with her relatives or arguing with her ex-husbands fiancé. Throughout everything in Wheeze’s life she is dealing with she, also, is dead broke. Weezie is convinced that all her troubles will go away if she can make a big killing at an old plantation estate sale. Weezie has heard rumors going around that the furniture and paintings in this plantation home are worth over a quarter of a million dollars, but the bidding only starts at ten thousand. While Weezie is dealing with the troubles of her past a new man comes into her bright future, a chef. Her friend, CeCe, takes her to a new hot local restaurant where Weezie meets the bright new chef. (In this novel, the character goes by the name chef) Weezie and the chef have instant chemistry and immediately he invites her to his lake house. They talk and have an incredible made-from-scratch dinner. They look at the stars and fall asleep in each others arms. When Weezie is with Chef all of her troubles go away, however Weezie must return to reality. When Weezie returns back to her carriage house Talmadge is inside waiting on her. Talmadge then proceeds to kiss Weezie and constantly telling her how much of a mistake he had made. Weezie thinks about this momentarily and then tells Talmadge that she is moving out as soon as possible. Weezie finds a house on one of the best streets in Savannah, costing over 200,000. Then Weezie notices in the paper that the estate sale is coming up in one week and she can not wait that long. Weezie has to get a first look at what could possible be in that estate. The Chef has a massive truck and on the night before the estate sale opening Weezie and the Chef camp out outside the estate in the back of his green truck. However, when they arrive there are, also, about forty-five other cars parked outside of the estate. Weezie can not let any one get to anything before her. Around two o’clock in the morning, Weezie wakes up and notices that the second story window is cracked. Weezie wakes up the Chef and they find a ladder. Weezie rolls into the estate and silently walks through looking for the treasures of the estate. Weezie is opening every day she can get her hands on, until she opens the closet and a body is laying dead cold in front of her. To make matters worse the silent alarm went off and the police show up right beside Weezie. Now Weezie has to explain to the police why she broke into the estate, and why the dead body is none other than her ex-husband’s finance Caroline.
