Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, by J.K. Rowling, is the first of seven installment of the Harry Potter series. Harry Potter is a very misfortunate boy who lost his parents at a very young age and was forced to go live with uncle and aunt, who view him as a burden rather than a blessing. Harry learned that he was no unique boy at his eleventh birthday, when Hagrid, a half-giant, comes and tells him that he, Harry, is a wizard. He then goes to a wizard school called Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, where he meets his two future best friends, Hermoine and Ron. Throughout his first year at school, Harry meets Professor Snape, who has a wee bit of a mean attitude towards him, and Draco, who is Harry’s jealous enemy that always wants to oppose him. In the school year, Harry finds a love for the wizard sport of quidditch, a sport where you fly on brooms and you try and throw balls through rings and another player tries to catch this independent moving ball. He is the youngest player in quidditch history in the last one hundred years. As the year comes to an end, he is faces a battle with Lord Voldemort, the most evil wizard in the wizard world and the person responsible for the murdering of his parents, James and Lily Potter. In conclusion, Harry defeats Voldemort, which is a surprise because no one has ever survived him, and then returns home for the summer as he awaits for the next school year to arrive.

In my opinion, this book series is worth reading because the ways that the author portrays her ideas and how she uses such descriptive vocabulary, you cannot help but continue to read until you have finished the book. The book has enough more than enough action to keep you entertained and the way that the story is based in the wizard world, it gives you a whole new imagination when reading this book. One problem that I have with this book, is how there is too much dialog and how Ron, Harry’s best friend, is too afraid to take chances and he should be more like Harry, or ‘arry as some of the characters say. The whole idea of good and evil and the huge affect that it has on this novel series is what I like most about it. There is Harry, the good pure character who always does what is right, and his friends, who have the small moral compass as himself, and Draco, a character in the novel that Rowling tries to display as an evil character, who represents as temptation, and Lord Voldemort, the most evil character in the novel who represents all that is bad. In conclusion, I believe that anyone who wants to spend a week of their life to read a book, then it is definitely worth their time to read this book

  1. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a really great book. I agree with Alex and also believe that it is worth reading especially considering that I recently reread the book just for fun. J.K. Rowling is a great author and I really enjoy her works. I have read the entire series and really enjoy the various adventures throughout the story. I love how J. K. Rowling depicts her version of a magical world where students attend school in order to learn and practice magic varying from spells to potions making and riding on brooms. If you like fictional, magical stories you will really enjoy this book.

  2. I can't even count the many times I read this book. JK Rowling is a really talented author, and is a master at creating small plots throughout one large theme. I agree with Alex and Becca and say that the Harry Potter series is definitely the one to read. I just recently made a friend into a book-lover through Harry Potter. The neat thing is, I don't think I've ever met anyone who says they dislike the books. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone has some hints of a writer who has just discovered her talents, but that is one of the great things about Harry Potter- the author is just a normal person who "had a dream".

  3. I have read Harry Potter and The Sorcerer’s Stone and I liked it very much. It is a fantastic beginning to a great series. J.K. Rowling captures you in the mesmeric story of magic as soon as you open the book. I agree with Alex, Becca, and Sara in saying that this book is a must read for everyone. As soon as you start reading you will be hooked. Rowling does a wonderful job of expressing how she thinks a magical world would be and she is very creative when she does so. Even if you don’t like reading, you will enjoy this book.

  4. The novel "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone" is an extremely popular novel, and for good reason too. I have found myself carelessly quoting passages from the novel on a weekly basis. I have read this novel at least a dozen times. This book is a smooth and enjoyable read that anyone with a brainstem can enjoy and respect. J.K Rowling uses contemporary language and technology in the novel along with a hint of “magic” to catch the reader’s attention almost mystically. Harry Potter is the prime example of a rag to riches story that lifts hearts everywhere. This novel is definitely worth the read, and for those who are skeptic…well, at least give it a glance. I promise you won’t regret it.

  5. I have read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone many times and I enjoy it more and more each time I read it. I agree with Alex and believe that this book is definitely worth reading. This is a very entertaining book with a great plot and very likable characters. J.K. Rowling is a fantastic author and I also suggest reading the other six novels in the Harry Potter series. I think that it is incredible how J.K. Rowling has created the magical place of Hogwarts, all through her imagination. With J.K. Rowling’s descriptive vocabulary you can actually visualize the characters and the setting of the novel, as if you were really there.

  6. “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” is a great read. I cannot even begin to count the number of times I have read this book. I agree with the review, because after selling over fifty million copies this novel is an undeniably phenomenal read. After the first time I read this book, I wanted to attend Hogwarts and become a witch myself. Throughout all of J.K. Rowling’s detailed writing, the reader can actually visualize in their own imagination what everything looks, smells, tastes, and feels like. This book will keep the reader on their toes, and never wanting to put it down. I highly recommend everyone to read this series.

  7. I have read the Harry Potter series many times. I think that Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a very wonderful start to this great series. I agree with Alex that everyone should take the time to read this series. Once you begin this book you can’t put the book down. And as soon as you are finished reading one of the books in the seven book series you find yourself rushing to begin the next book and find out what happens to Harry in the next novel. I disagree with Alex about his saying that there is too much dialogue in this novel. I think that there needs to be a lot of dialogue so that this book can set the foundation for the next seven books. Also, I think that this book is just showing us who Harry is and who all of his friends are at the enchanted witch and wizard school of Hogwarts. I think that the Harry Potter series is a must read.

  8. I love the Harry Potter books, I'm actually one of those strange addicts who can answer everything about the books. Sorcerer's Stone is a great book, and I'm sure almost everyone has read it. But more inspirational than the first book alone is how it came into being. J.K. Rowling was a very poor single mother of three before the books were published. She was actually living in a small apartment and still struggling to make ends meet as a cafe waitress. She wrote the first book on a bunch of napkins in the cafeteria becasue she couldn't afford paper, and when her manager saw it, he let her type it up on his computer and sent it to a publisher. And voila, here she is today, the richest woman in entertainment (even richer than Oprah). It's a really inspirational tale, and shows how just a little imagination can come a long way.

  9. I read this book in the second grade because Brian Chou told me it was incredible. I agreed with him then and I agree with you now. This book is hard to forget and I don’t know if it’s because of the movies or if it’s because it’s a great book. I love every word of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series. My favorite part was when Harry plays Quidditch for the first time. The school setting also gave me a new appreciation towards school. This novel truly birthed my love for reading. I love knowing how inexperienced Harry was in this novel, and watching him mature as a wizard all the way though to the last novel.

  10. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a novel I have read too many times to count. To this day, I can still perfectly remember the moment I bought this book in the second grade. From the instant I began reading, I was hooked, and I easily fell in love with this novel. I still enjoy the book as much as I did as a seven-year-old, to today as a sixteen-year-old. J.K. Rowling is an author who writes the series in a way that readers of any age can enjoy the magic. Rowling’s wonderful, descriptive language makes you feel as if you are inside the castle walls of Hogwarts experiencing the adventure with Harry, Ron, and Hermione. This novel greatly changed my opinion of reading, and it stemmed my love for good books.

  11. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone is a great book to read. In my opinion it is the best out of the seven in the series because of how original it is and it sets the stage for the seven books that followed. I was very young when I read this book and it did an awesome job of hooking me to the Harry Potter series. I would recommend this book as a good read for all ages because it has something for everyone whether you are young or old. It keeps you going from the start to the finish.

  12. Just like everyone one else who commented on this blog, I also feel Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a superb novel and that J.K. Rowling is a truly gifted author. Out of the Harry Potter series I can honestly say this first novel is my favorite. Every time I read it, I am just as fascinated as Harry is by this wonderfully magical wizarding world. Rowling’s unique story captivates my imagination and she keeps me reading furiously until the very last word with her vivid descriptions of everyone and everything in Harry's world. This story is remarkably imaginative and an excellent read for anyone!
