"The End of the Matter" ~ Alan Dean Foster

Imagine that you have never seen your parents before. You were sold into slavery at a very young age. You might feel lost and unwanted. After 16 years you find a clue that leads you in a search for your parents. This is how Flinx of the Commonwealth feels.
When Flinx finds a clue about who his parents might be he jumps on it. While investigating who his parents are, Flinx becomes involved in a fight with a group of assassins called the Quarm that are trying to kill the alien Abalamahalamatandra. To escape from the Quarm and to continue his search for his parents, Flinx travels to the planet Alaspin, home world of his mini-dragon Pip. On Alaspin, Flinx gets shot at by the natives, lives a life-like fantasy, and gets reunited with his friends Tse-Mallory and Truzenzuzex. From Mallory and Tru, Flinx learns about a collapsar, or movable black hole, that threatens part of the galaxy. He also learns that Abalamahalamatandra is the key to finding and using a device to destroy the collapsar. This device was created by a long dead race of aliens and is an anti-black hole. A secret search for this device is soon initiated. Unfortunately, the AAnn, a group of snake-like aliens, know about Flinx’s plan and want to stop Flinx from using the device. Once found, Abalamahalamatandra activates this device. It does nothing. So, fearing their lives, Mallory, Tru, and Flinx ditch the device into space. The AAnn try to retrieve the device but instead set it off. Soon, a great display of colors and energy emerge from the device, making the AAnn disappear and dissipating the collapsar. The universe is saved, but Flinx still doesn’t know whom his parents are.
“The End of the Matter” by Alan Dean Foster is a great book. Once I started the book I was unable to put it down. Mr. Foster has woven a story that is excellent. One of my favorite parts is at the end when Flinx discovers that Pip is female. One of the interesting things about this book is that no matter how hard Flinx tries, he is unable to stay on his task of looking for his parents. The search for my parents would be non-stop and not distracted by the impending doom of the universe. However, Flinx does find the next closest thing to his parents, a person who knows more about Flinx than he knows about himself. This person is a man named September. September was one of the men that were trying to buy Flinx as a slave.
When I first started this book, I was a little disappointed. The beginning was slow and wasn’t anything like the beginning of Alan Dean Foster’s other books. However, this did not stop me from reading on. The book turned out to be fantastic. I would recommend this book to everyone. “The End of the Matter” is only 240 pages long. If you are not a person that can sit for long periods of time then this is the book for you. The only problem I had with this book was finding it. “The End of the Matter” is currently out of print. Copies of this book are available at Amazon however.

  1. I think that The End of Matter sounds like a great book. I have not read it myself, but it definitely seems like a book that is worth taking the time to read. It seems like a very action-packed book about a boy trying to find his parents. I think that is very sad that he should have to be finding his parents, because slavery is a terrible thing, but I think it is great that the person who knows him best is willing to help even though he tried to buy Flinx in the beginning. I think that this is a book that I will definitely have to invest my time in and read.
