“Something Borrowed”
By: Emily Giffin
This novel is a major page turner, which I really enjoyed. This novel has the reader rooting for the anti-heroine at all turns. This novel may not be true to reality, however, people do make mistakes, and sometimes people do fall in love with a person that there technically not supposed to be with. I originally picked up this book because I needed a book to read on the beach. When I read books, I like them to be “easy reads”. Any book I chose must, also, grab my attention from the very start. “Something Borrowed” does just that. The very first chapter is Rachel’s deception of her best friend. This novel pulls the reader in and immediately begins the drama of Rachel’s world. There is no waiting for the book to get started and no one telling you, “Oh you just have to get through the first chapters.” The book comes alive in the readers mind, making this novel a compelling and engrossing book.
Something borrowed is a novel based on an attorney living in Manhattan, Rachel White. Rachel has always been the typical good girl, never receiving less than an “A”, always putting her friends first, and never putting her happiness first. That is until her thirtieth birthday, when her best friend Darcy throws her a party. That night, after too many alcoholic beverages, Rachel becomes a lady of the night with Darcy’s fiancé. Although she wakes up determined to put the night behind her, Rachel is shocked to discover that she has genuine feelings for the one man she cannot be with. As the wedding date nears, Rachel knows that she has to make a choice. This choice is made harder since Rachel is Darcy’s maid of honor. Rachel decides to tell Darcy’s fiancé, Dex, that either he breaks off the marriage or she pulls herself out of the equation. After about a week, Dex comes over to Rachel’s apartment and tells her that he is still going through with the wedding. Rachel leaves New York and goes to England to see one of her oldest friends. However, when Rachel returns, Dex is waiting for her at her apartment. Dex then tells Rachel the wedding is off, and they can finally be together. Rachel must decide whether true love or a lifetime friendship is more important.
I highly recommend this novel to all readers who are looking for a light and fun read. This novel puts decisions in perspective and the way to true happiness right in front of the reader. After finishing the novel, I noticed a quote on the “dedicated too” page. “The lines between right and wrong can be blurry, endings aren’t always neat, and sometimes you have to risk all to win true happiness.” This book clearly shows a reader all of these things. The reader can put that quote into their own lives. That situations and morals are not just black and white. Between all the drama and suspense and a new twist at every page, this book was impossible to put down.

I think this book sounds very interesting and a great book to read. I like how this novel has such a realistic plot throughout. I think this novel can really show a person to find happiness and the importance of love in one’s life. I really like the quote that Emily says near the end of her post, and I think the quote shows reality and the theme of the book. I think all people should read to learn the concept of true happiness.
