THE NOTEBOOK by Nicholas Sparks

Before I read this novel, I saw the movie. I never really had a desire to see the movie or read the novel. Then after I saw the movie, I completely LOVED the movie! So that inspired me to read the book for it. The Notebook is a beautiful yet sad story of love-lost-found written by the author Nicholas Sparks. Based on a true story of Nicholas Sparks wife’s’ grandparents, it is set in North Carolina and part of South Carolina during WW2. Noah Calhoun is a simple construction worker who has carried his love for Allie Nelson, a high-class southern bell, since their teen years. After they meet again, years later, they quickly begin to love each other again. Allie is soon caught between staying with her fiancĂ©e or her first true love, Noah. Before any of this, the novel begins with Noah, in his eighties, in a nursing home. Then it takes the reader back to the earlier days when Noah first met Allie Nelson, illustrating to the reader how the two of them fell in love deeply. Then they were later torn apart by Allie's family for Noah was from a different class. After fourteen years of separation, the lovers reunited and quickly are reminded of their true love for each other. Allie was engaged lawyer Lon, who fit her families standards, she follows her heart and stays with Noah. Sadly, the story does not end here. Many years have past, Alllie is very old and now has been stuck with Alzheimer's disease. Not that healthy either, Noah reads a journal to her everyday that has all of their memories written down it to help Allie remember their past together. The Notebook is one of my favorite novels. Though the movie is very sweet and one of my favorites, I would recommend reading the book over watching the movie. This novel attracts all readers and for many age groups. It is also very easy to read and follow. I’ve only read it once, but I will probably read it again in the future. My favorite thing about the novel is how Sparks uses the notebook to flashback their memories. The notebook itself is the witness of Noah and Allies true love. Sparks knows how use the best wording, to make you love the characters and whole story together. My absolute favorite part, is when Noah and Allie finally meet. I think it would make any reader happy. This scene is so sweet and heartfilling. Another action or scene I enjoy, is just overall how Noah never gives up. He is very sorrow but never surrenders to despair, even though the doctors tell him the readings wont help Allies situation. The Notebook is not just another copy of any other love story. It goes even further then the lesson of love, but explores other things such as, family loss. Most importantly, after reading the book, the book itself taught me that the belief in love can help people go through tough challenges in their lives.

  1. I know the basic story of the Notebook, as I have seen the movie many times. Never, though, have I read the novel. This book review definitely makes me want to read the Notebook, rather than just be content with watching the Hollywood version of the novel. After watching the movie, I did not find many themes, but it sounds like the novel is full of them. Learning something from what one reads is very important in my opinion. The Notebook just might contain some lessons to learn, if Meredith’s review is correct. Hopefully, I will soon have the time to read the Notebook, and I absolutely plan on reading it.

  2. I absolutely adore this movie! I didn't even know that there was a book, and after reading this post, it made me so excited to be able to experience such a romantic and beautiful story in another way. With myself barely being able to hold back the tears no matter how many times I watch this movie, I hope that such intense emotions can be portrayed to the readers through the book as well. Since movies often can’t even compare to the great text of novels, I strongly desire to read this book, and hopefully it will allow me to appreciate my all-time favorite movie even more!

  3. I own this movie and have watched it quite a few times, it is a fabulous movie as well as a tearjerker. After reading your review, I am quite compelled to read the novel as well. Every girl wishes to live "happily ever after" and this is a fantastic example of a fairytale love story. I also find it quite interesting that this was based on a true story. This fact makes me want to read the novel even more. Nicholas Sparks sounds like a fantastic author, and although I haven't read any of his novels, I am looking forward to reading this one.

  4. Along with the other posts, I too have seen this movie and absolutely love it! My grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s this past year and it has been very hard to watch her struggle with the disease. The movie has become more and more difficult to watch, but it is also good to know what to expect. After reading this post, I am now very interested in reading the book and seeing the story from a different point of view and in more detail. I am always up for a good love story and I think this book could be inspirational because of my grandmother and what she is going through.

  5. Like the four posts previous to mine, I have also seen the movie of Nicholas Sparks’s The Notebook. I have, however, read the novel as well. If you’ve seen this movie, and truly loved it as I think most girls have, you will fall even more in love with the novel. Most stories are better told, or written, than shown on screen, in my opinion. And Allie’s and Noah’s story certainly comes alive through Nicholas Sparks’s work. Whether you have seen the movie The Notebook, based off of Nicholas Sparks’s life, or not, I would definitely recommend reading his novel if you truly want to indulge in a love story!

  6. I have only watched the movie The Notebook which I loved. The book sounds five times better. Reading this book sounds like you actually get into the story yourself and start thinking of the lessons and major themes of the book; whereas, watching the movie you just watch the events go by and don’t analyze the real meaning. I think Sparks really is trying to teach people that love is forever, and some people will do anything for love, just as Noah. I will definitely find time in the future to read this novel.

  7. Like all of the previous posts, I have also only seen the movie. I have seen it many times, and probably cried a couple of those. The movie takes you into a world where an amazing love story unfolds. The movie keeps you wondering if the two will actually end up together, but I am sure that the book does an even better job of that! I really want to read the book now. This sounds like a book that would be excellent to read lying in the sun on the beach! I can't wait to see all of the elements in the book, and then watch the movie yet again to compare the two!

  8. Along with many other girls in high school, I absolutely love this movie! I've watched it several times, and it never seems to get old. Reading this post makes me want to read the novel. Great love storie's have always been compelling to me. In a lot of cases, movies just can't compare to the novel itself, and Meredith's post seems to prove that point in this case, as well. If that is true with this novel, it must be amazing. This will definitely be the next novel I pick up to read, and I can not wait to jump into this romantic tale once again.
